I’m a U.S. citizen, do I need a Italy visa for US citizens?
If you are a U.S. citizen then you do not need to apply for a USA Visa for Italian Citizens if you are spending no more than 90 days in the country. This is because the U.S. and the Schengen Area have a visa-free travel arrangement. You should, however, ensure that your passport is valid up until at least three months after your planned return home.
It is worth noting that from 2021, citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver before they travel, which can be obtained online and will cost €7 ($7.82).
U.S. residents and green card holders who are not citizens, and hold a passport from a state that does not have its own visa-free travel agreement with the Schengen Area, should apply for a Schengen Visa via the nearest Italian consulate.

Italy visa requirements for U.S. citizens
Americans planning to stay in Italy for more than three months must have an entrance visa obtained from an Italian consulate before coming to Italy, as well as a residency permit, to be obtained upon your arrival in Italy by visiting the post office and police station. Those wishing to stay for more than 12 months may also have to sign a declaration of integration.
To obtain your visa, you will need a valid U.S. passport, travel and medical insurance, documentation showing you have accommodation, your itinerary and the reason for your stay – such as a letter inviting you to study, a job offer, or family invitation, as well as proof of funds showing you can afford your stay, such as bank statements. You should take any documents you need to an appointment at your nearest Italian consulate.

What are the Italy visa requirements for US green card holders?
For a Tourist visa Italy from U.S.A you will need:
- a valid passport or travel document whose expiry date is three months longer than that of the USA Visa for French Citizens requested ,
- a valid U.S.A. residency permit or other form of Identity Card.
- completed application form. Fill out the online application here
- one passport format photo,
- travel and medical insurance covering you up to €30,000 in costs that is valid in Italy and the whole Schengen Area,
- travel tickets,
- proof of accommodation such as rental agreements, hotel bookings, or an invitation from friends and family
- proof of financial subsistence, such as bank statements.
